LIGHTING – By Amy
For our music video for “Talk to Frank” by High Tyde, we plan on having low-key lighting throughout. We plan on having the low-key lighting as we envision the shooting for the music video to happen late at night. Our main idea is to have the band playing a small gig that has a reasonably sized crowd, within this scene we want to have the lighting low, as that is the typical lighting for a gig setting and we also want to create a mysterious image for the band. Throughout this we would like to have artificial fluorescent lighting that adds a fun and youthful image to the video.
We also plan on having shots that our filmed outside and around the area, following a group of friends going to the gig and the antics that they get up to on the way there, whilst they are there and on the way back. One of the main things that we had as an idea was to have the group of friends riding their bikes along a dimly lit street. For this scene we would initially like to only use the street lights as it creates that chill/late night atmosphere that we would like to have.
We know that one of the risks of filming late at night in low key lighting is that we could struggle to have footage that is clear. To reduce the risk of this delaying our shooting we are going to take some still shots along areas that we would like to use and we will also film small tester clips that will allow us to experiment with colour manipulation in post, but to also allow us to know if we need any extra lights when it comes to shooting.
For the lighting inside the gig, we plan for the main lights to be the classic white/off white spot light that focuses on the band and then when the shots focus on the audience to have the fluorescent lighting on them. We mainly want to focus on using three colours – pink, purple and blue. We plan to use these as they are some of the typical colours that are used in environments like a gig but also they are colours that still keep the mysterious image that we want to create.
CAMERAWORK –
For camerawork we plan on using a handheld camera, we have chosen to use this because we feel that it will allow the audience to become involved with the music video. When we are focusing on the gig setting we want a few handheld cameras to be in the crowd, focusing on members of the friendship group that we plan to have within the narrative. Using quick cuts, we plan to edit this in within the other footage.
MISE EN SCENE - By Naomi
The props we decide to use will fit the conventions of the indie genre. Our main props will be the instruments which the band will be playing throughout the video. This will make the audience know that it is an indie music video, we will be using these in the scenes where the band members will be playing the chorus but there will be some footage of them playing in other parts of the video. The instruments will be focused on a lot as we don’t want to show the bodies of the band members but only parts of them such as mouths, eyes and hands. This connotes a mysterious feel to the video, leaving the thought in the viewer’s mind of ‘Who are they?’ Another prop that we have decided to use is either/or fireworks and sparklers. The main idea for our music video will be a night out, focusing on what happens during that time, we want to include random footage showing experiences you might come across while being out at night. We feel that using fireworks and sparklers could be really strong footage, this would give a fun feel to the video and work to our benefit with lighting. For the footage of the fireworks, we wouldn’t set them off ourselves but attend a fireworks night and record some. We also want to include some biking scenes in our video, where a couple of teenage girls or boys bike down an empty road just having fun and laughing. This would again enforce the feeling of having a fun and an almost childlike night with your friends within our music video. Making the audience feel like they are living it as well.
Lighting will be massive for our video to work out how we want it too. For the lighting in the band scenes, we all imagine a dark room with hardly any lighting but using some strobe lights to make sure it isn’t too dark not to see the band members. We want to create a gig type feel by using the lights, connoting a night out to the audience. This also fits the conventions of the indie genre and it is also something that our target audience would be used to seeing from other indie bands.
For the band members we plan to have them in casual black clothing, this meets the conventions of an indie genre as the indie bands. This will give the mysterious atmosphere that we want to achieve. For the group of friends, we have decided on a casual yet party-like clothing to give the impression they are on a night out and to show their youth. This will make the audience relate when seeing this, as our target audience would be doing this in their own life.
Blocking is also a big part of our music video, as we want to have the band on a stage being higher up than the audience, this will show the viewer that they are the most important people in the gig setting. We also need to create the atmosphere where there is a lot of people, when we will only be using a small area to film in, we will do this by showing shots of peoples backs and shoulders to create a fuller gig environment.
ANGLES AND SHOTS:
Throughout our music video, we will use a lot of different angles, within the gig scenes we want to give the impression of a big gig, to do this we will include high angle shots above the band and onto the audience, low shots of feet to give the impression there is a lot of people. We will also use some long shots within biking and fireworks scenes to show the extent of how much fun the group of friends are having. We will also use close ups on the band members facial features and hands to give a mysterious vibe to the band.
SETTING - By Lorna
In our music video we plan to have several different settings, the first of which is a gig setting. We plan to have a small intimate gig setting so that the viewer can live vicariously through the members of the audience and feel close to the band. It also makes the band appear as genuine and down to earth, as we found during our music video analysis this was a conventional representation of indie artists. We plan to use A5 as our location while filming, as it would be easy to fill with people and has a black backdrop so it would be easy to conceal the fact that it was in a school. In terms of lighting we will use the lighting equipment in A5, this will include a lot of coloured lights. We plan to use pink and blue lights, as the contrast of warm and cool colours seems conventional, as seen in The Paper Kites music video Electric Indigo. Furthermore, we feel the party-like atmosphere would work really well with the track as it has electronic influences. Also, this kind of reckless adolescent fun is very conventional for indie videos as the target audience is young adults and we want to include it, as our target audience is the same. Going with this theme we plan to use outside settings too, for instance we plan to use shots of our protagonists riding their bikes at night on a street lit with street lights, due to the difficulty we may face during filming this we may film earlier in the day during dusk and darken the footage or bring extra lighting. We plan to also include locations such as the local kebab van as this has clear associations with nights out and could evoke nostalgia in the viewer, nostalgia being another convention of the genre that became apparent during our research.
EDITING:
In the editing of our video we plan to use lots of quick cuts, this is both due to the pace of the song and the fast pace being indicative of youth, which is an important part for the representation of our artist as it is part of Dyer’s Star Theory and makes our artist relatable and desirable to the audience. We also plan to use distortion, this is too infer the use of recreational drugs and alcohol in our video as it ties in with the title of the song, FRANK being the name of a drug and addiction help line, and the lyrical content. Distortion also ties in to the conceptual element we want to inject into our video. We will include speed manipulation for the same reasons, the increase or decrease in pace being synonymous with drugs in a lot of TV and film, we plan to slow the speed down as it would fit better with the beat of the track. Lastly, we plan to use colour manipulation as we want the colours to be really vivid in this video, both due to the theme of drugs but also because in a lot of indie hybrid songs like this one the colours are really prominent especially if the song is more upbeat like this one.
