our song + initial ideas

Our Song

After our genre research we then moved on to finding unsigned artists to use in our final piece. We had settled on Indie as a genre and were open to the subgenres of indie too. We took on the task as individuals and then came back together as a group to discuss what we had found using online platforms such as Spotify, YouTube and SoundCloud. We were looking for a song that would allow us to use but challenge the conventions of an indie genre. Naomi and I primarily focused our search towards YouTube and discovered an indie music channel called “The Hyve” that helps promotes unsigned indie artists. Naomi later found a song called “Talk To Frank” by a unsigned British group called “High Tyde” – we all loved the song and felt that had an equal mix of indie/pop and indie/rock, allowing us to experiment with more conventions. We later emailed the group’s manager to ask for conformation to use the song.

Focus Group

We played our chosen song to 7 students between 16-18 to see what their reactions where like to the song. We asked them a total of four questions that would aid in the making of our final video. Here are the results.

Initial Ideas

Our initial ideas are currently focusing more towards a party/night scene for the video. We felt that having a low key lit setting would allow us to experiment with fluorescent tubing and things such as sparklers. We plan to keep the video a performance video but to also add conceptual aspects. Due to the title “Talk to Frank” being a reference to the drug educational/helpline website we felt that it would work well to include conceptual elements as it could possible fit with the theme of being under the influence of alcohol or drug substances.
