Questionnaires

For our audience research, Naomi created a questionnaire that we handed out to 15 males and females of varied ages. This enabled us to obtain information on their own ideas and reactions, allowing us to later compare these to our own and to inspire our music video. We asked the following questions:

  • What gender are you?

  • How old are you?

  • How many music videos do you watch weekly? (multiple choice)

  • How many music videos do you watch all the way through? (multiple choice)

  • What is your favourite genre of music? (multiple choice)

  • What type of music video would you expect to see in an indie genre? (multiple choice)

  • Do you expect to see the performer/artist to appear in the video? (multiple choice)

  • What theme do you expect to see in an indie music video? (multiple choice)

  • Do you expect the video to be minimalistic or extravagant? (multiple choice)

  • Who is your favourite indie artist/band?

After gathering our audience research, Naomi took the results and created them into pie charts.

Pie Charts

What is your gender?

Out of the 10 people we asked, 5 were male and 5 were female. We decided that we wanted information from both genders as it is conventional for the indie genre to appeal to both sexes and we also want to create a music video that will appeal to both male and female allowing for a wider audience appeal.

How old are you?

We handed our questionnaires out to a variety of people, the ones who completed it ranged between the ages of 12 and 25. Majority of the people who completed the questionnaire fell into the 17-25 category. Although we didn’t receive any research for the people 25 + we found that between the ages of 12-16 and 25+ aren’t as familiar to the indie genre compared to the 17-25 participants. This helps us narrow down our target audience to males and females between the ages of 17-25.

How many music videos do you watch weekly?

We then wanted to know if watching music videos was a common thing through their week. We discovered that majority of them watch 4-6 music videos a week, depending if there are new releases or not.

How many of them do you watch all the way through?

Linking in with the previous question we asked them if they watched them the whole way through, as we want our video to engage the audience right through until the end. Majority of the feedback stated that 70% of audience watches most of the music videos all the way through and a 20% of them watches everyone all the way through.

What is your favourite genre?

We then asked them what their favourite genre was, giving them a choice between 8 of the most commonly seen genres. We found that Pop, Rock, Indie, Soul and Hip Hop were all some of the most common genres listened to.

What type of video would you expect to see for an Indie mv?

We then began to focus on our chosen genre of Indie, and asked them what type of music video they would expect to see in that genre. 50% of the audience said that they would typically expect to see a performance video for the indie genre. This is conventional for and indie video and is also an aspect we would like to include in our own music video.

What themes would you expect to see?

We then asked what type of theme they would want to see in an indie music video, 30% said that they would want to see happiness as a theme and another 30% said that they would want to see sadness. For our music video we want to use happiness as a theme but we could also incorporate elements of sadness in areas.

Would you expect to see the performer?

We then asked them if they would expect to see the performer/artist in the music video, 90% of them said that they would and a 10% said that they wouldn’t. originally we wanted to avoid showing our artist in our music video, but after receiving feedback, we feel that we should show the artists in some way if we want to appeal to a wider audience.

Who are some of your favourite Indie artists?

Our final question asked the audience what some of their favourite indie artists are, we discovered that The 1975 are very popular throughout, they are a group that challenge the conventions of both indie and pop.

Would you expect the video to be minimalistic or extravagant?

After watching music videos, ourselves, we asked our audience what type of music video they would expect to see for this genre. A minimalistic video or an extravagant/overdone video. Over 60% answers that they would want to see and extravagant/overdone video, meanwhile 40% what to see a minimalistic video. We personally feel that minimalistic will be incredibly hard to pull off so we plan to find a happy medium between the two.
