WHAT IS LIP SYNCING?

Lip syncing is when an actor or artist match their lip movements with a pre-recorded soundtrack. It can be used during live performances or visual productions such as music videos, adverts or films.

Lip syncing is typically used within live performances; it allows the artist to create a more physical stages that engage and excite the audience. Especially during dance stages, artists tend to lip sync as the act of regulating their breath becomes harder and makes it difficult to sing. Within music videos, lip syncing becomes part of the production stage. Many artist lip sync during the production of their music videos and then the original track is match up to the lip sync in post. A different example of this is George Ezra’s Budapest, in his behind the scene footage for the music video he talks about how he has to lip sync in double speed in order for it to match the song in post. This because in the music video the footage is in slow-mo meaning that for the sync to match he would have had to slow down the music video by 50% whilst speeding up the sync soundtrack by 50%.

WHY IS LIP SYNCING USED?

Lip syncing is used to make things easier for the artist, with the proliferation of technology we now have equipment to auto-tune and even completely alter an artist’s voice. If an artist has chosen to enter their career based on an altered voice, a live performance could shatter the illusion for the audience, therefore lip syncing becomes key. Also a lot of talk shows and also a TV show called Lip Sync Battle, use lip syncing to create comedic effects.

OUR PRELIM LIP SYNC

As a group, we got together and discussed the possibilities of songs, we knew that we wanted to do a pop song as the cuts would be quite quick, allowing us to use a lot of editing techniques. We all really like the idea of experimenting with a split screen as it we could use multiple times throughout the video. We finally settled on using ‘Born This Way’ by Lady Gaga as it is an electro pop song, so we could achieve the quick we desire and also experiment with colours throughout the video.
