normal people is a new Irish series that Came to the BBC is based off of the best selling novel by Sally Rooney and is about two young Adults who Seem completely different but are surprisingly very similar. The show faced a lot of backlash for being a bit too raunchy with scenes showing a lot of nudity.
There’s been a lot of miss match reviews on the show but personally I think it’s been one of the best TV shows that I’ve seen in a long time. I think that the way it explores their relationship is stunning and the way that it shot, It’s a beautifully filmed series. A lot of the negative comments on the series said about how they just felt like it was a very slow and not interesting storyline but I think that’s what I loved about the show. We’ve gotten so used to having his really fast paced, in-depth, really dramatic story lines, So when we see something that doesn’t necessarily have that we automatically deem it as boring. but I think the whole purpose of the show is to show you how a normal relationship works and how they deal with the struggles that they have to face.
Nothing was over dramatised In my opinion and I feel that that’s what I really liked about the show as well because I think sometimes producers and directors can get really carried away with making something super super dramatic but also then just completely forgetting the underlying storyline. I think it just really broke down stereotypes that surround relationship sometimes. Connell and Marianne who are the two main characters are quite influential in their own ways they both have factors that an audience can potentially recognise in themselves and I think that’s really good to have in TV shows because it then creates a connection between the audience and the character.
The show also covered some really tough topics like suicide, abusive relationships also mental health. I feel like some shows can sometimes get too carried away and end up glamorising these things quite badly so that you don’t actually see the severity of it but I feel like normal people kept it so raw that to watch it all happen and unfold was hard to watch at some points. I really enjoyed watching the series And I personally felt like it was something I really connected to it really resonated with and I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much but I definitely think for those who haven’t watched it and I’m just going off the reviews I’ve heard from other people, I think definitely give it a try and see what you think because there’s so many different interpretations to the show
